What is 'Solidarity'?

One dictionary definition of the term 'solidarity' describes it as the 'unity of interest and action' and within the Emmaus movement it is one of the founding principles. It is the action of the poor helping the poor.

Local Action

For us in Sheffield it means that as a Community we subscribe to the belief that it is our duty to help those most in need.  It might be that someone has just left prison and needs a bed, a sofa or a cooker to furnish a new place to live.  Similarly it might mean that a woman fleeing domestic violence, who needs to set up home again will be helped to furnish her new home.

International Action

Emmaus Communities not only raise money through their social enterprises to sustain their own Communities, but also support other projects through Emmaus International, in Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe.  The aim of these actions is to reinforce the groups' capacity to work and develop actions locally in favour of the most underprivileged in their communities. In 2005 the total amount raised for international solidarity was 565,000 EUROs.
